Chris Greenacre is a former Altofts Juniors AFC player who is incredibly proud of his roots.
Chris began his professional career at Manchester City, where he progressed through the youth ranks before making his senior debut in the mid-1990s. Though first-team chances were limited, he gained valuable experience on loan at several clubs before making a name for himself at Mansfield Town. There, he became a prolific striker, scoring over 40 goals and helping the team achieve promotion from the Third Division.
In 2002, Chris moved to Stoke City, then playing in the Football League First Division (now the Championship). He spent three seasons at Stoke, gaining experience at a higher level before joining Tranmere Rovers, where he became a key player and regular goalscorer over four successful seasons.
In 2009, Chris took his playing career overseas, signing for Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand’s A-League. He played three seasons for the Phoenix before retiring from professional football in 2012.
After hanging up his boots, Chris stayed with Wellington Phoenix and transitioned into coaching. He has since served as an assistant coach, interim first-team manager, and reserve team head coach. In 2024, he was appointed head coach of New Zealand’s U-20 Men’s National Team, leading them to qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. He also holds the prestigious AFC Pro Licence, the highest coaching qualification in the region.
Chris Greenacre’s journey from the Premier League to international coaching is a fantastic example for young players — showing where hard work, resilience, and a love for the game can lead.
